With its twisting gravel tracks and awesome countryside, Cyprus has become a top venue for car rallying in recent years. Several car rallies, including a round of the World Rally Championship (WRC), take place on this island.
A WRC rally event has taken part in Cyprus every year since 2000. All the great rally drivers of the current era have pitted their wits against the twists and turns of more than 18 stages spread out over 326kms of Cypriot countryside. All of the stages are run in the countryside to the north of Limassol and Paphos. The event normally lasts three days, and has recently been moved from a mid-summer slot on the WRC calendar to a weekend in May.
Besides the WRC rally event, Cyprus is host to a number of other car rallies throughout the year. The exhilarating Troodos Rally in the autumn is a favorite on the FIA Middle East Rally Championship Calendar.
Classic car rallies too are organized in Cyprus. The Cyprus Automobile Association via FIPA has run a classic car rally for the past 18 years on the island. It is a well-recognized event that sees pre-1982 cars take on the narrow twisting roads of Cyprus from Nicosia over to Paphos and back again!
